The Southern German stallion festival at Munich-Riem took place between January 24th and 28th, 2008 at the Munich Olympic stadium. Aside from licensing and acution, this included a gala evening with a presentation of some of the best South German stallions under the saddle, as well as the presentation of the new champions and selection and presentation of the new young premium stallions.

The Champion, a Sir Donnerhall x Regazzoni son, bred by Stephan Kurz in Zoebingen and owned by Katrin Burger, sold for 150 000 Euro at the auction following the licensing and award ceremony. He was bought by a German businessman and will be standing at stud. The Reserve Champion was an impressive Lord Loxley son out of a Caligula dam, trained and shown by German international dressage rider Uwe Schwanz (www.uweschwanz.com) and bred by Martin Niedermair (www.niedermair-warmbloods.com), who also bred his paternal grandsire, the legendary Lord Sinclair. Niedermair was also honoured for his contribution to Bavarian Warmblood breeding.

The Gala Evening saw the presentation of the star sire Alassio’s Boy, the 2007 Southern German Champion, under Nicole Caspar, as well as the 2007 Young Horse Champion Stahlesmuehle’s Aljour under the saddle of Uwe Schwanz.

There were many international buyers present at the Saturday afternoon auction, where Munich held its reputation as one of the prime auctions for quality horses at very reasonable prices, especially for the non-licensed stallions that have excellent potential for a career in the dressage circuit. A non-licensed Fuerst Heinrich stallion (catalogue Nr. 12), out of a Weltmeyer dam, was knocked down for 19 000 Euro, and the buy of the day must have been an exceptionally beautiful Rubin Cortes son, owned by Sarah and Tony Pidgley in England. The black, non-licensed stallion sold at the auction for 17 000 Euros.

Markus Gribbe, the chief rider of the Pidgleys, was at Riem, as was the breeder of Samira, Heinz-Bernd Schumacher. The Pidgleys had bought the Sandro Hit daughter, who will be shown under Gribbe, when she won the 2007 Federal Championships. For their contribution to European Warmblood Breeding through their Kilbee stud, the Pidgley’s were honoured by German exclusive equestrian fashion store MFN Sportsline with a tailor-made dressage suit for Gribbe, to whom a voucher was presented by MFN CEO Hans-Joerg Ulber.

The 2008 Southern German stallion festival was recorded for Internet Television and excepts from the 2nd day, the presentation of the stallions in loose jumping, can be viewed online at this link: http://www.clip-my-horse.de/mediacenter.html
